- 2 (Munnar)
So this is what it feels to be utterly,deliciously sinfully
colonial,you will find yourself wondering,as you soak
in the neat arrays of verdant green,dotted with the
red and blues and violets of the women who are plucking
tea leaves….Tea plantations,trout-filled streams,placid
lakes,picnic spots at each bend of the winding road,trekking
routes that take you to the highest peak in South India….Munnar.
Things to see and do
Munnar gets its name from the Malayalam
and Tamil phrases for "Three rivers" as the
town is situated at the confluence of three mountain
streams,5,250 ft above sea level. |

Tea factory and plantation tours
Tata Tea,which claims to be the world's largest integrated
tea company,has 26 factories in Munnar and you can get
permission to visit one of them from Tata Tea's Regional
Office. |

Hitting the spice trail
Munnar is meant for walking,so do exercise your legs.

Trekking
Munnar is home to South India's highest peak,Anamudi,8,842
ft above sea level,and getting there is half the fun.There
are several shorter treks all around,including the famous
Lockheart Gap ,13 km from Munnar,which offers a panoramic
view of God's own art.

Angling
Munnar has several mountain streams and brooks that contain
fish like trout which would tempt any angler. |

Devikulam
A little hill station,7 km from Munnar,Devikulam boasts
some rare flora and fauna,and also the Sita Devi Lake
,good for trout fishing. |

Mattupetty
Mattupetty is a quaint little place,13 km from Munnar
town.An ideal spot to pitch a tent is in the area known
as Old Munnar,near Mattupetty Lake and Dam.The specialized
dairy farm of the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project is located
here. |

Eravikulam National Park
This is the home of the Nilgiri Tahr,the rare mountain goat
that is fast becoming extinct.

- 3 (Munnar)
For long, Munnar, the best-kept secret among hill station
destinations is now the choice of honeymooners, tea tasters,corporate
warriors and winnable colonial masters.Wrapped in the greenest
of carpets the best way to get around the side of Eden and
simoultaneously saveour it's delights is to hire a bicycle. |

- 4 (Thekkady)
South India's most popular tiger reserve is set around
Periyar Lake near Thekkady,3,300 ft above sea level.As
day breaks over the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary,a herd
of elephants sets out to the edge of the lake,now no
longer alarmed by the distant whirr of the motor boat
laden with humans.
Things to see and do
What lies beneath the lake? Fishes,crocodiles,water-snakes,monsters?This
must be how the earth looked like once-wild,free,uncaged,raw,pregnant
with memories,like elephants.Elephants have memories,yes,and
so will you when you leave Periyar,Thekkady,Kumily.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the few places
where the chances are pretty high that you will spot an
elephant in the wild at close quarters.Not just elephants,
but, if it's your lucky day, tigers, gaur, mahseer, otter

To mingle with the jungle,you must trek through the
forest paths for a feel of the wild or to commune with
nature.

Idukki District,of which Thekkady is a part,is where

Alappuzha referred to as the Venice of the East.It has
grown in importance as a backwater tourist center,attracting
